Pterobyte learns the ropes of road travel

October 31st, 2008 by Jim Baldwin | No Comments | Filed in Hampton Frostbite

Parked amongst good company

Traveling with a boat on a trailer is new to me and most of our team.  It is an ambitious goal and we are taking it one step at a time.  Getting the experience of packing the boat up, moving it to new harbors.  Getting all the details covered.  This is all pretty daunting.

One step at a time.

We, Mark and I, took the mast off this week.  I drove it down to Hampton, the Hampton Frostbite Series, last night.  It is now parked and ready to be rigged Saturday Morning.

This is our first ‘road‘ trip actually on the road.  I must say, moving by road was a lot less stressful and time consuming then sailing down to Hampton.  Give the time we probably missed a really good sail though.  But this gives us the experience we need to be sure we can actually campaign the boat on the road.  We are looking forward to Charleston SC.

20-30kts of wind tries the crew and sails of Pterobyte

October 20th, 2008 by Jim Baldwin | No Comments | Filed in FBYC Fall Series

Not having sailed this boat over 18kts of wind we were not sure what to expect from it. The boat and hardware did fantastic. I had selected our 4th string, yes we have four, main. I did this in case we had any issues, the damage would be limited to 4th string sails and or delivery sails. As it turned out that was the only damage and the age and lack of use and prep of the sale did us in for both races.

The second full batten on the main popped out it’s pocket and forward of the mast. I suppose we could have done a sail change back to the 2nd string main, which we had on board just in case. With crew we had, some green on the outside, and the dark windy weather we opted for shelter and cleared the batten. That made us miss both races for the day.

On the good side, the boat did fantastically well in the wind and waves. It was HUGE confidence builder in the boat. Thanks crew for doing such a great job!

Pterobyte onthe Masthead of SSentinel

Small vitory I know, but we made a cameo appearance in the video in the local paper. We also are a boat included in the mast head of the site for now. I know it’s small, but hey one small victory for Pterobyte and giant leap for pterokind.

We could not have asked for better weather.  Blowing briskly, clear and , mild.

Here is a picutre take from a passer by, thank you, on the way back.

Great Day on the Water

September 29th, 2008 by Jim Baldwin | No Comments | Filed in FBYC Fall Series

What looked like a wash out due to rain turned into a great day on the water. Light air prevailed but we got in two races for the Fall Series #2.

We had a rough start on the first race, I got the boat to weather for Struthers before the start had to tack away, that made us late to the line. Results

The second race was better we stayed with the pack, dove deep on the last downwind and pickeup on the a few J105 to take a second. Results

Over all we walked with a 3rd for the day.  Way to go crew: David, Chris, Bob, Justin.

Wolf Trap 2008 Results

September 14th, 2008 by Jim Baldwin | 2 Comments | Filed in Event Schedule, Wolf Trap 2008

Wow, we got it done. Pterobyte made it’s debut race yesterday, 9/13/08, at FBYC Wolf Trap race. The crew was fabulous we ended up with Jerry, Bob, Mark, Mellisa, David, Travis and Jim.

After a delay waiting on wind, we had a great start position. We lead the fleet to the first and second weather marks but lost ground on the long tight reach, from Milford to Wolf Trap, to Double Eagle, a J109. Double Eagle rounded Wolf Trap and set out on a beam reach. I set Pterobye dead down on the rum line which put us right in the current and slow. Wavelength took to the shore and got out of the current. After the long slow run back to FBYC we finished 3rd.Pterobyte Results

I am so delighted with all the help I received from everybody that made this possible and such a great start for Pterobyte!

Thanks to Mike Dale for helping me launch the boat the night before and rescuing me after the ladder fell. That is another story. And thanks to Miles Booth for single handedly stepping the mast. Thanks to Elisabeth

for putting the lunch together for the crew and providing the pizza, beer and chicken.

Chris Tulip couldn’t make this race. He has put so much into this to make it happen as well. I could not have gotten the boat ready in time if it were not for his late nights, even an overnighter, that made this come together.

Thank you all!

Thanks to Jon Deutsch for this photo after rounding Wolf Trap and setting the spinnaker.
